At approximately 11 a.m. on Monday, June 19, an officer was driving in a police car with a county employee when it was struck by another driver in the area of College Parkway and Peninsula Farm Road in Arnold, leaving the cruiser disabled.

The driver, later identified as Oxon Hill resident Hector Portillo, 35, proceeded into a nearby neighborhood and stopped to flee on foot, leaving his wife and five kids behind, police say.

Portillo didn’t make it far, and was apprehended not far from his vehicle without further incident after bailing.

According to police, the investigation determined that Portillo was under the influence and driving with his family when the crash with the police vehicle happened.

Neither the officer, nor county employee was injured, though all of the passengers in Portillo’s vehicle were taken to an area hospital as a precaution. Charges against him are pending.
